Producer and director Gary Wheeler describes himself as a “proud Regent film guy.” Along with his wife Jodie, he attended classes at the university in the 1990s. Today, he’s celebrating success as co-producer of the movie War Room with popular Christian filmmakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, whom Wheeler has known for years.
“I have always respected them as individuals and their work as leaders in the Christian film industry,” he explains. “When they decided they wanted to shoot where I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, I was happy to join the team.”
Their collaboration resulted in a box-office hit that has earned nearly $68 million to date. War Room, which has an audience score of 90 percent on the movie-review website Rotten Tomatoes, will be released on DVD December 22. While Wheeler’s a long way from his days as a struggling film student, he and Jodie are grateful for their time at the university.
“Regent was a great experience,” he says, “and a great place to be around other creative types, who were seeking to serve God through their giftings. We look back on those days very fondly.”
